...Entering Colorado from the south, alpine terrain is encountered in the
South San Juan, Weminuche and La Garita Wilderness areas. The coyotes gets
the company of mule deer, bighorn sheep and elk.
Close to the highest point on the route, Indiana Pass at 11,910ft (3,632m)
a mining Super Fund site have left a region severly scarred. Long mountanious
climbs, alpine meadow flora, aspen stands and wild water rivers are some of
the highlights before leaving the beaver favoured slopes bordering to Wyoming.
The weather can change quickly in these mountains. Early evening thunderstorms
and cool nights can be expected. Wild water rafting, canyoning and horse riding
are other summertime pastimes - perhaps for a day with no cycling (?). Go
